Book Week: Phillip Pullman

This week, we are learning all about the life of Philip Pullman.  We have discovered that he was a teacher in Oxfordshire and that he has written several award-winning novels, including Northern Lights, as well as several short stories.  We have written our own Philip Pullman biographies and to complement these we have created a class piece of Pop Art using his image.

Philip Pullman was born in 1946 in Norwich.  He lives in North Wales.  He went to Oxford University to read English between 1964 and 1967.  In 1971 he became a teacher.  Philip Pullman wrote his first book Count Karlstein in 1982 and his second book Ruby in the Smoke in 1986.  Philip Pullman won an award for Count Karlstein in 1996.

In 1971 he became a teacher and in 1982 he wrote his first children's book, Count Karlstein.  Between 1986 and 1992 he studied for his Bachelor of Education (B Ed) at Westminster College.

In 1996 Count Karlstein won a Carnegie Award, then in 1997 he wrote a new book; The Subtle Knife, which, with The Amber Spyglass, won a Whitbread Award in 2001 and further awards in 2002.

We started this week by reading Count Karlstein, examining the differences between his traditional novel and his graphic novel.  Currently we are reading Clockwork, another one of his short stories, with the aim of turning this into a class graphic novel by the end of the week.... watch this space!

Well .... CONGRATULATIONS, YOU DID IT! The class rose to the challenge and produced a fantastic graphic novel of Clockwork by Philip Pullman.
